Full Itinerary

Day 1: Rongai Gate to Simba Camp

Commence your Rongai Route trek at Rongai Gate, positioned at an elevation of 1,950 meters (6,398 feet). This route, less traveled, offers a unique perspective of Kilimanjaro. Trek through lush rainforest, gradually ascending to Simba Camp at 2,650 meters (8,694 feet). Settle in for your first night, surrounded by the rich flora of Kilimanjaro.

Day 2: Simba Camp to Second Cave

Embark on the day's journey, venturing further into the heath and moorland zones. The trail unfolds, revealing the expansive landscapes characteristic of the Rongai Route. Reach Second Cave at 3,450 meters (11,319 feet) for your overnight stay. As you ascend, take in the scenic beauty and anticipate the challenges and rewards of the days ahead.

Day 3: Second Cave to Kikelelwa Camp

Continue your ascent through the alpine desert, offering panoramic views of the surrounding peaks. The trail takes you to Kikelelwa Camp at 3,600 meters (11,811 feet), where you'll spend the night. The serene surroundings provide an ideal setting for acclimatization and preparation for the upcoming stages of the trek.

Day 4: Kikelelwa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn Camp

Hike through the lunar-like landscape of the alpine desert, approaching Mawenzi Tarn Camp at 4,330 meters (14,206 feet). Nestled beneath Mawenzi Peak, this campsite provides awe-inspiring views. As you gain altitude, revel in the unique features of Kilimanjaro's rugged terrain and rest for the night in preparation for the summit push.

Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn Camp to Kibo Hut

Continue your trek, crossing the lunar desert toward Kibo Hut at 4,700 meters (15,420 feet). This marks the final camp before the summit attempt. Acclimate to the high altitude, and prepare both mentally and physically for the challenging ascent to Uhuru Peak. The stark beauty of the surroundings adds to the sense of anticipation.

Day 6: Summit Attempt and Descend to Horombo Hut

Embark on the summit push in the early hours, navigating towards Gillman's Point (5,681 meters/18,638 feet) and ultimately reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters/19,341 feet) as the sun rises. Descend to Horombo Hut at 3,720 meters (12,205 feet), where you'll spend your last night on the mountain. Reflect on your accomplishment and bid farewell to the high-altitude landscapes.

Day 7: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate and Departure

Descend through the heath and moorland zones, reaching Marangu Gate at 1,860 meters (6,102 feet). Complete park formalities, receive your summit certificate, and celebrate your successful ascent of Kilimanjaro. Transfer back to Moshi, concluding your Rongai Route trek with a sense of accomplishment and memories of the diverse landscapes encountered on this less-traveled path.
